CHAPTER 13

Thankfully, Danric had at least a rudimentary idea of how to drive a team of horses, and so was able to return them to the palace without incident.

But the arrangement left Evaraine alone within the carriage, wishing they’d had more time. More time to discuss what they’d learned from the diary. More time for Danric to recover from the attack and ask himself what he wanted to do. More time to…

To what? Danric still didn’t really trust her, and he shouldn’t. She was hiding too much from him and would continue to hide it. But he needed someone to confide in. Someone to help him feel less alone as he dealt with the utter collapse of his world. His brother’s magic, his father’s betrayal or possible death, his mother’s abdication… everyone had left him. And as proud and cold as he seemed at times, he still had a heart. He cared about doing the right thing, as he’d proven yet again when he agreed to meet with the man who’d attacked him.

But as much as she longed to ease Danric’s burdens, she could never be that person for him. At best, she had to hope they were still allies now that the diary had revealed its terrible secrets.

That was assuming Danric even believed Vaniell’s claims. And if he did, would he choose to investigate? Act on his brother’s accusations?

Whether he did or not, Evaraine had to question whether Danric’s personal dilemmas would prove too great of a distraction for him to recall his promises to her. He might well find himself too busy to be concerned with her protection—specifically, from King Melger himself.

It was not as if she would blame Danric for the oversight. But from this moment, she would need to plan as if she must see to her own safety, which brought back her earlier questions about her own power.

What if it were a choice between using her power and losing her life? Why had she always hesitated, even when she knew it was no different than her bodyguards’ use of a blade? Now that she was alone and under threat, could she choose differently? Should she?

Danric’s silence continued, even as they arrived back at the castle, and he turned the horses over to a groom. He did not even pause to respond to the poor man’s disjointed queries about the driver’s disappearance, only returned Evaraine to her suite, bowed briefly, and retreated, leaving her with an uncomfortable feeling of loss.

She’d felt strangely close to him during those short days where the diary had been in her keeping, and the mirror in his. As if those objects had given shape to the connection she’d sensed since they first exchanged letters.

Was that all over now? Could he walk out of her life this easily and never exchange words with her again?

The idea continued to trouble her as she walked through the door to her rooms. But the moment she saw Lady Piperell’s face, those concerns shriveled and died.

“Your Highness.
